Dating a sw revolver by serial number

So, I understand that there is a book that allows the owner to look up manufacture dates of S&W's based on their serial number.

I saw this on another forum, and since I didn't want to cheat on my favorite forum, I was wondering if anybody might have access to this book and be able to help me out (since I really have no use for the book, and I work three jobs, so money is tight).

The ranges are SUPER tight here, as SW really started making a ton of guns then, and most models shared serial ranges.

If it has a one or two digit number, and THEN a "D," and THEN some more numbers, (meaning the "D" will be either the second or third character in the serial, and all other characters are numbers) it is from 1977-1983 After 1983 the serials get crazy and will be in the format of three letters, and then four numbers.

Current manufacturer located in Springfield, MA, 1857 to date. to import, sell, and market all Walther products in the U. In 1957, S&W began a system of numbering all models they made.

Between 1983-1987, Smith & Wesson was owned by the Lear Siegler Co. During 2012, Carl Walther Gmb H Sportwaffen and Umarex announced the formation of Walther Arms, Inc. Hand Ejectors are the modern type revolvers with swing out cylinders.

S&W's Dan Wesson agreed to produce a new revolver that would handle "high-intensity" .38 Special loads, but only if Winchester would develop a new cartridge.

I was told it was a 1981 and am trying to verify that date. If you post up the whole number (or all but the last two or three) I can narrow it down even tighter.

10 by itself means started in 1957 10-1 started in 1959 10-2 started in 1961 10-3 started in 1961 10-4 started in 1962 10-5 started in 1962 10-6 started in 1962 10-7 started in 1977 10-8 started in 1977 10-9 started in 1988 10-10 started in 1988 10-11 started in 1997 (probably not this or later, since your gun is blue) 10-12 started in 1997 10-13 started in 2002 Using these tables together, you should be able to narrow down a decent range of when your gun is from.

see if i can find out how to date one of these I would start with a small token of my affection...

I may have to finally get around to buying that smith book that gives the dates.
